The houses too, were made of dreams The motorways are empty I’ve been woken up at night By the silent railway line I’m worried darling, we should have known it wouldn’t last I’m tired baby, we should have known it from the start The marble columns were made of cardboard The bank safe is empty All that you thought was good All that was real I’m worried darling, we should have known it wouldn’t last I’m tired baby, we should have known it from the start I’m frightened darling, we should have known it wouldn’t last I’m tired baby, we should have known it wasn’t real I’m worried darling, we should have known it wouldn’t last I’m tired baby, we should have known it from the start

I saw you at the opening, you were the talk of the town. You were dressed in designer clothes, so carefully torn It was like a spy movie, you were hamming it up. Always up with the latest trend, you left the old ones behind.   But I remember you fearless, like a highwire act, You could stop the band playing and just talk for a while   You have houses and hotels, and people to meet, You have bashes and meetings, and ribbons to cut And your new friends are strangers you are so happy to know   But I remember you played the violin, and the jacket you lost In a hotel in Antwerp where I first heard your name And I remember how it felt when my heart stopped beating, Yes, I remember how it felt when my heart stopped beating But you left it in a bar under the waves Yes you left it in a bar under the waves

On the last day of the warehouse You were on the bus on your way to work There wasn't much left of it Just a tiled wall and a no-smoking sign Dark stains where the stairs used to be   "There is a wave coming, it's closer every day, there is a wave coming and it’s coming after you   On the last day of the warehouse you told me: "I think all of this began a long time ago There's a border that splits this town in two, I've been trying not to notice, but I can't think of anything else".   "there is a wave coming, and it will cover all There is a wave coming and it's coming after you".   No one in this town feels this feeling, everybody's happy and there’s no problem to be solved The doctor told you you were fine but you have not felt the same since the last day of the warehouse,   "there is a wave coming..."

woodfires 02:50
There are wood fires on the edge of town From a past as foreign as the present Working the land, sowing seeds over gas stations Herding cattle across the motorway Ring those bells Ring those bells Ring them till we wake this town Well the crickets are chirping, the grape’s on the vine Wake the wells and springs til they flow again Scare the swallows away, shake the fruit from the tree Until the clay and straw walls stand again Ring those bells Ring those bells Ring them till we wake this town We’ll go to a roundabout by the slaughter house Down to the valley where the sewage pipe runs and give them back their names
5.
the lakes 01:44
Above the lakes is a place I know I'll never be On a snowy sunday morning We'd go sliding down to the open square On a cold thursday evening we would sit down To watch the lights go on over the city I can hear you talking far away I can hear you through the wind
6.
You come home from school and it feels like a failure You know the way so well you could do find it with your eyes closed But there’s another path that you’wish you could be taking To the wild and windy seas There’s a restless feeling that is climbing up the valley There’s the sound of the rain that is tapping on your window And there’s a knock at the door that you know it’s calling for you To the winding path, on the changing tide To the sweetest call of the road Through the traffic jams, along the crooked mile To the bitter end of the road To leave everything you’ve known for the lure of somewhere stranger To travel the paths you’ve traced on the maps in your bedroom They have a hold on your heart that is growing ever stronger There are many things that you don’t understand Every night you dream of the wild and windy seas And there’s a change in the wind that is blowing at your window To the county gates, to the forest fires To the bitter end of the road From the suburb walls, from the outback sun Comes the sweetest call of the road To the sweetest call, to the bitter end, to the rolling tide of the road To the sweetest call, to the bitter end, to the rolling tide of the road

downriver 03:49
On both sides the land stretching by There’s no way but down no escape from this heat You’ve been travelling at night When the guards eyes are closed You have chosen to be wrong To go down, downriver The animals are sleepless tonight The air is sticky and dark And you’ve thrown off your ragged sheets And you’ve broken the window latch You have stolen a day, you have stolen your life And when the dogs start calling, you’ll be Down, downriver I don’t care if I go down I don’t care what I find I don’t care what I’ve done wrong I don’t care if I go down I don’t care what I find I don’t care what I’ve done I’ll go down, downriver downriver go down, down the river downriver go down, down the river

rondpoint 03:42
So many things, so many lives So many days gone So many friends lost An empty school, an empty drumkit Is waiting for you Our road will cross, we'll meet againx2 All that was dead, all we kept silent Comes to life in a rondpoint Drawn from your eyes a rain of sounds A rain of silence A rain of silence, the figures blur away Our roads will cross, we'll meet again x2

eleven 03:20
Eleven trees, eleven souls They hide, so quiet Eleven thoughts, eleven flashes all at once Eleven cards, eleven hearts Unveil the steps And the branches swing slow around the moon And they catch eleven stars and try to bloom All there tonight Eleven trees, eleven souls Embrace the roots Eleven souls, eleven steps Down Eleven steps, eleven reigns of war and peace And the branches swing slow around the moon And they catch eleven stars and try to bloom All there tonight And at the end, eternity awards your treasures inside Either paradise, paradise or hell And at the end, eternity awards your treasures inside Either paradise, paradise or hell And from this hill you see your sons, they say it hurts Eleven times, eleven or twelve

Spring just came down from the south today Like a muttered omen, I heard your name, It goes with the rain, it fades as the chill returns It comes with the dark, it goes with the light of day It’s come on the first day of spring I saw you in the wings Drinking glasses behind the scene I met you in the city, I knew you before You were part of the cast when she used to perform It goes with the rain, it fades as the chill returns It comes with the dark, it goes with the light of day It’s come on the first day of spring It came to me, I didn’t ask for it, it just came to me How I could I expect in October to embrace the Spring It goes with the rain, it fades as the chill returns She comes with the night, she goes with the light of day She's here on the first day of spring

Take my hand, I’m stuck too many floors from home Walk me down until I can breathe again There are many mistakes I could make There's a darkness in this city Take me to the flickering lights To the window at the end of the garden I spent so long trying to make sense of it Take me to the flickering lights Some nights the streets were as quiet as a bedroom Some days I felt trapped in a residential hell I would daydream in a slow bus I would go to the quarters covered in asphalt Take me to the flickering lights To the window at the end of the garden I spent so long trying to make sense of it Take me to the flickering lights Take me through the storm Take me to the flickering lights Take me through the storm Take me to the flickering lights

RifRaf 02:19
When you're not there, funny things happen like people singing in the underground On the tram to the centre of town you look around you, You see the arguing couple, the old moroccan man, the stops that you know And you have the feeling they’re all playing a role When you look round they just pretend And stop acting again when you turn your back Rif raf In the greyest morning you feel it’s there Out of sight, slightly out of reach. When you get the feeling you have seen everything You change your way to work We were all standing at the Seventh Hole And we learnt to cross Boulevard Lemonier To take a turn into the Zebra and change sidewalks to escape. You’re stumbling through filmsets, you’re crashing through time tables and appointments. The slow tram takes its time but you're travelling in your mind. Rif raf

about

The CD contains two independent mini-albums, "On the eighth floor" (songs 1 to 7) and "At the piano workshop" (songs 8 to 14) recorded at separate sessions but sharing the same approach: to record songs without bass or drums, in a simplified manner, without much post-production work and with a strong sense of the locations they were recorded in.
