Empty trams

I remember the buses, the trams, the underground
We were talking to friends by the plastic bars
where the air smelt like frites
In a town so small you'd meet everyone you never wanted to meet,
In a town so small you would meet everyone you ever wanted to meet.

Now I could go round the city
from morning til night,
I would go overground and then underground
I wouldn't meet anyone, only empty trams

We don't remember where we started,
we were in this wagon since station number one
Through every stop in every line, every node in every network

I was talking out loud and I just couldn't stop,
I was sitting there quietly, I could not manage a word.
Though I knew the lines quite well I would take the longest way

Nothing ever happened but it felt like a song.
It was fun for a while listening to my old walkman
but I took the underground home and I never went back.

Now the trams are empty, and there's cars everywhere,
and we play music on the car radio and don't have to wait at stops.
